What is blue light?
Blue light is part of the visible light spectrum and has a short wavelength (380-500 nm), which means it is more energetic than many other types of light. It occurs naturally in sunlight, but modern technology has significantly increased our exposure through LED screens, smartphones, tablets and artificial light.
Where is blue light found?
Source | Amount of blue light |
---|---|
Sunlight | High |
LED bulbs | Moderate |
Smartphones | High |
Computers | High |
TV screens | Moderate to high |
Although natural blue light from the sun helps regulate our circadian rhythm and keep us awake, artificial exposure from screens can have negative consequences.
How does blue light affect the eyes?
Prolonged exposure to blue light can lead to a number of health challenges:
1. Digital Eye Strain (DES)
Digital Eye Strain, also called Computer Vision Syndrome, is a collection of symptoms that can occur after prolonged screen time. Symptoms include:
-
Tired, irritated and dry eyes
-
Headache
-
Blurred vision
-
Difficulty focusing
-
Increased photosensitivity
2. Disturbed sleep rhythm
Blue light in the evening can inhibit the production of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep. According to research from Harvard Medical School, exposure to blue light in the evening can delay sleep by up to 90 minutes.
3. Risk of retinal damage?
Some studies suggest that high exposure to blue light may contribute to oxidative damage to the retina, which may increase the risk of macular degeneration. However, the research in this area is still inconclusive. A report from the American Academy of Ophthalmology rejects a direct link, but still recommends limiting unnecessary exposure.
How does blue light filtering work?
Blue light can be filtered in several ways, the most effective of which are:
1. Blue light glasses
Glasses with blue light-filtering lenses reduce the amount of blue light reaching the eyes. These come in different levels depending on how much light they block:
Filter type | Blocking rate | Recommended use |
Low (<20%) | Minimal filter | Daily use |
Medium (20-50%) | Moderate filter | Office work |
High (50-99%) | Strong filter | Gaming/night work |
At Celaren, we offer blue light glasses that combine effective filtering with a stylish design. Our glasses reduce harmful blue light and protect your eyes, whether you're working, gaming, or streaming late-night shows.
2. Software-based filters
There are several software solutions that reduce the blue light emission of screens:
-
Night Shift (Apple)
-
Night Mode (Windows 10 & 11)
-
f.lux (third-party app)
But unlike blue light glasses, these do not protect your eyes from the blue light from the environment.
3. Screen adjustments and work routines
In addition to filtering, you can reduce blue light exposure by:
-
Take breaks from the screen (Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds)
-
Use of anti-reflective screen coatings
-
Adjust the light settings on your devices
Who should use blue light glasses?
-
Office workers and students : Long screen time can cause eye strain and headaches.
-
Gamers and streamers : Hours in front of a screen require optimal protection.
-
People with sleep problems : Reduced exposure to blue light can improve sleep quality.
-
People with headaches or migraines : May reduce photosensitivity.
-
Elderly people : The eyes of elderly people are more sensitive to screen radiation and may benefit from extra protection.
Myths about blue light and blue light glasses
-
"Blue light is harmful to the eyes" – Not scientifically proven, but can cause fatigue and sleep problems.
-
"All blue light glasses are the same" – There are big quality differences in lenses and coatings.
-
"Screen adjustments are enough" – Software reduces blue light from the screen, but does not protect against ambient light.
-
"Blue light glasses make all text easier to read" – They can improve comfort, but do not necessarily have an effect on text sharpness.
